10/5/2023 0 Comments Ilift twinOver the 14 lines of the sonnet, the poem moves from making a negative comparison to the Colossus of Rhodes to animating the “new Colossus” with a voice, an instance of what literary critics call personification or, to use the more unwieldy term, prosopopoeia: They are, however, the imagined voice of a figure within the poem. In the afterlife of Lazarus’s poems, the words that the statue cries out in the sestet-the final six lines of the poem-have often been treated as though they were identical to the voice speaking the rest of the poem. To place Lazarus in that lineage is to see her poem as something more than a competing vision of American greatness, as Comey and others would have it. This difficult, “high literary” form, ostensibly the property of a white European elite, has become one of the available tools to take apart the racism of society and the ravages of a global economy. These poets, in sonnets such as McKay’s “ The White City,” Brooks’s “ A Lovely Love,” and Agüeros’s Sonnets From the Puerto Rican, expose that greatness as being predicated on the slavery, denigration, and exploitation of colonial, African American, and Latinx subjects. poets across the 20th century, from Claude McKay to Gwendolyn Brooks to Jack Agüeros, have turned to the sonnet for a critique of American greatness rather than a liberal redefinition of it. It is more at home in the conversations, translations, and negotiations between national literatures than in the creation or renewal of national eminence. The sonnet, in contrast, is a flexible, traveling form, one that moved from Italy to England. Historically, the epic poem has been the type of poetry best suited to nationalist projects, because its narrative establishes a “storied pomp” in literature that has yet to exist in the world. A Petrarchan sonnet is an awkward vehicle for defenses of American greatness. The poem’s peculiar power comes not only from its themes of hospitality but also from the Italian sonnet form that contains them. The liberal sentiments of Lazarus’s sonnet cannot be separated from these developments in geopolitics and capitalism. immigration policy and European colonialism, well before the physical Statue of Liberty was dedicated. “The New Colossus” stands at the intersection of U.S. The year after Lazarus’s poem was read, the European countries met in Berlin to divide up the African continent into colonies. Though set to last for 10 years, various extensions and additions made the law permanent until 1943. The year before Lazarus’s poem was read at the Bartholdi Pedestal Fund Art Loan Exhibition in New York, in 1883, the Chinese Exclusion Act became the first federal law that limited immigration from a particular group. “The New Colossus” emerges at a pivotal moment in history. But the details of the poem’s production and of its author’s biography do not fully capture the conditions under which the poem emerged, conditions that help to explain the poem’s message to its immiserated masses. She wrote the sonnet, after some persuasion by friends, for an auction to raise money for the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty. The Jewish Lazarus was a prolific writer in multiple genres, a political activist, a translator, and an associate of late-19th-century literati-including Ralph Waldo Emerson and James Russell Lowell. The story of the poem’s creation has circulated almost as widely as the lines of Lazarus’s poem. Whether the popularity of “The New Colossus” is a consequence of the poem’s timelessness, its curious forgettability, or its “ schmaltzy” sincerity, writers, readers, and politicians resurrect Lazarus’s sonnet to speak directly to a present moment in which anti-black racism, xenophobia, immigration bans, and refugee crises define the terms of U.S. To marshal Lazarus’s poem in support of a redefinition of American greatness, however, is to capitulate to the terms of Trump’s exceptionalism-and to ignore the poem’s own radical imagination of hospitality.Ī little like Robert Frost’s “The Road Not Taken,” published in 1916, “The New Colossus” is one of those poems that is constantly rediscovered and recontextualized. For Pelosi, diversity is both the existing strength of America and its source of revitalization. It’s a recognition that the strength of our country is in its diversity, that the revitalization … of America comes from our immigrant population.” For Comey, diversity is greatness. It’s a statement of values of our country. Comey’s tweet echoes Nancy Pelosi’s interpretation from early 2017: “You know the rest. Several other public citations of Lazarus assume that her poem is reducible to a message about the value of diversity. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!” This country’s greatness and true genius lies in its diversity. “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. 10/5/2023 0 Comments Zed books ltdTauris imprint includes Bloomsbury's market-leading list in Middle East Studies as well as a rapidly growing Politics and International Relations list. With nothing confirmed as of yet, we’ll still be waiting to see what happens, but if sources are correct, Apple TV+ and NFL Sunday Ticket may be a done deal. With that in mind, it also seems like an opportune time for Apple to pick up this deal ahead of the NFL’s 2022 season. NFL Sunday Ticket has mostly been an exclusive deal for Direct TV, but the latter’s contract with the NFL is set to run out in 2023. Apple recently reached a deal with the MLB, securing Friday Night Baseball just as the lockout ended and this year’s games began. With this in mind, a deal with NFL for Sunday Ticket wouldn't be outlandish.Īs Apple has worked to pick up further programming for Apple TV+, this wouldn’t be the first time we’ve seen the tech company close out a deal to get sports on its programming. Apple has actively worked to get more sports programming such as MLB Friday Night Baseball. If that’s the case, we may very well see Apple or the NFL announce Sunday Ticket for Apple TV+ in the very near future. According to the report, Apple and NFL have apparently been in negotiations for quite some time and, at this point, a deal regarding Sunday Ticket is “Apple’s to lose.” The report also alleges that one anonymous source said the deal is “actually done,” and simply hasn’t been announced openly yet. That price got students everything that is included in NFL Sunday Ticket Max, which in addition to all the games includes NFL RedZone and DirecTV Fantasy Zone channels. Word of Apple and NFL’s Sunday Ticket deal originally came from a report on Puck News posted on April 17, 2022. Eligible students could sign up for NFL Sunday Ticket for a monthly cost of 29.99 per month, which equates to 120 for the full four months of the NFL season. Though nothing has been openly announced, sources close to the situation have claimed that Apple has negotiated to feature subscription packages for NFL Sunday Ticket on its programming. Here’s what you need to know: NFL Sunday Ticket will move from DirecTV to YouTube and YouTube TV, starting this fall. The monthly YouTube TV fee would be a separate charge. It would seem that Apple and the NFL may be coming into the home stretch on a deal to put the latter’s premium sports package, Sunday Ticket, on Apple TV+. Key to note, these prices do not include the $72.99 per month charge for YouTube TV, they are just for NFL Sunday Ticket. If you want to add NFL RedZone to that, allowing you to see every touchdown from every game as soon as it happens, the price rises to $389 for a full season, but until September 19 that is now $339. This will give subscribers every out-of-market game, the ability to watch on their TV and other supported devices, unlimited simultaneous streams in their home and YouTube TV's full lineup of more than 100 channels, including local ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC stations. The standard NFL Sunday Ticket/YouTube TV deal normally costs $349 for the full season, but from now until September 19 there's a $50 discount that makes it $299 for the entire season. There are two options, pairing YouTube TV with the standard NFL Sunday Ticket plan and then another plan that adds NFL RedZone on top of both of those. You can get NFL Sunday Ticket at an even bigger discount if you opt to pair it with a deal for YouTube TV, giving you the ability to watch both locally available NFL games and Sunday Ticket's out-of-market NFL games all in one place. Miami Dolphins' Tyreek Hill (Image credit: Rob Carr/Getty Images) Once the season is over, your NFL Sunday Ticket will automatically renew, so if you don't want to pay for it you will need to cancel before the next season. The free offer from Verizon only covers the 2023-2024 NFL season. This deal cannot be applied if you already have an NFL Sunday Ticket account. The NFL Sunday Ticket package that Verizon is offering for free is the $449 NFL Sunday Ticket on YouTube plan, which gives you every out-of-market game on YouTube that you can stream on your TV and supported devices (though to be clear, this does not cover YouTube TV, which requires a separate YouTube TV subscription). Redeeming any of these deals must be done within 60 days of purchase or by December 13, 2023, whichever comes first. In the case of being a new mobile customer, the deal requires a phone purchase with a new smartphone line on an eligible Verizon Unlimited Plus plan.įor new home internet customers, the offer is valid with the activation of a 5G Home Plus or LTE Home Plus plan, or installation of a Fios 1 Gig/Fios 2 Gig plan.Įxisting Verizon mobile customers can also get NFL Sunday Ticket for free if they upgrade to Unlimited Plus or add a line to their Unlimited Plus plan. 10/5/2023 0 Comments Hifi rush platformsHere's the full video review of Hi-Fi Rush - and given how critical the game's animation is to its charm, it's well worth watching if you can. The system never feels overwhelming and quickly becomes natural. Similarly, enemies moves correspond to musical moments, helping you anticipate their actions. For example, attacks get a bonus when they're done to the beat, which is conveyed through the idle animations, game environment and UI as well as the music. On a basic level, it's not so different from something like Devil May Cry, but the key is that most in-game actions work better when timed to match the background beat. It's really a thrill ride from the get-go, a snappy character action game where you dodge, attack, parry, jump, grapple, and unleash a host of special abilities, all actions beautifully animated and super responsive. Let's explain how the game works, before we get into the technical nuance. Today, we'll be taking a look at Hi-Fi Rush's daring flair and beat-matching brawling action, and try to get a sense of what makes this game tick. It's also the first major first-party Microsoft title in over a year, ending a prolonged drought for exclusive Xbox software. This is a wild, courageous game that succeeds on just about every level - and it's an eye-popping visual treat as well. There are elements of action, platformer, rhythm and side-scroller games, all held together by an incredible sense of style and bold visual choices. Announced at Microsoft's Developer_Direct showcase last week and released immediately thereafter, the game is a wildly creative effort from developer Tango Gameworks. 10/5/2023 0 Comments Affinity photo v2In addition, efficient cleavage of the MERS-CoV spike enables MERS-like coronaviruses from bats to infect human cells 15. Experiments with SARS-CoV have shown that insertion of a furin cleavage site at the S1–S2 junction enhances cell–cell fusion without affecting viral entry 14. The functional consequence of the polybasic cleavage site in SARS-CoV-2 is unknown, and it will be important to determine its impact on transmissibility and pathogenesis in animal models. Given the level of genetic variation in the spike, it is likely that SARS-CoV-2-like viruses with partial or full polybasic cleavage sites will be discovered in other species. Polybasic cleavage sites have not been observed in related ‘lineage B’ betacoronaviruses, although other human betacoronaviruses, including HKU1 (lineage A), have those sites and predicted O-linked glycans 13. The turn created by the proline is predicted to result in the addition of O-linked glycans to S673, T678 and S686, which flank the cleavage site and are unique to SARS-CoV-2 (Fig. In addition, a leading proline is also inserted at this site in SARS-CoV-2 thus, the inserted sequence is PRRA (Fig. This allows effective cleavage by furin and other proteases and has a role in determining viral infectivity and host range 12. The second notable feature of SARS-CoV-2 is a polybasic cleavage site (RRAR) at the junction of S1 and S2, the two subunits of the spike 8 (Fig. Polybasic furin cleavage site and O-linked glycans This is strong evidence that SARS-CoV-2 is not the product of purposeful manipulation. Thus, the high-affinity binding of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein to human ACE2 is most likely the result of natural selection on a human or human-like ACE2 that permits another optimal binding solution to arise. While the analyses above suggest that SARS-CoV-2 may bind human ACE2 with high affinity, computational analyses predict that the interaction is not ideal 7 and that the RBD sequence is different from those shown in SARS-CoV to be optimal for receptor binding 7, 11. On the basis of structural studies 7, 8, 9 and biochemical experiments 1, 9, 10, SARS-CoV-2 seems to have an RBD that binds with high affinity to ACE2 from humans, ferrets, cats and other species with high receptor homology 7. Five of these six residues differ between SARS-CoV-2 and SARS-CoV (Fig. Six RBD amino acids have been shown to be critical for binding to ACE2 receptors and for determining the host range of SARS-CoV-like viruses 7. The receptor-binding domain (RBD) in the spike protein is the most variable part of the coronavirus genome 1, 2. Mutations in the receptor-binding domain of SARS-CoV-2 Our comparison of alpha- and betacoronaviruses identifies two notable genomic features of SARS-CoV-2: (i) on the basis of structural studies 7, 8, 9 and biochemical experiments 1, 9, 10, SARS-CoV-2 appears to be optimized for binding to the human receptor ACE2 and (ii) the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2 has a functional polybasic (furin) cleavage site at the S1–S2 boundary through the insertion of 12 nucleotides 8, which additionally led to the predicted acquisition of three O-linked glycans around the site. 10/5/2023 0 Comments Zd abacus 3lDracula’s castle might need to rent rooms on AirBNB. Also, this wine does not really evolve open. One would expect oxidation or sherry-like notes, but ZD has avoided that. It is outstanding stuff (5 of 5). Honestly, do not worry about pairing anything with it. We overuse words like complex or unique with wine. Each vintage, some tired, some hot, some bright, some dark, all call for attention. Ripe blueberry and black cherry liquor get layered into mocha, dried black vanilla bean, and soft caramel. Violets, fresh and dried glow, like the fanciest potpourri imaginable.
